I can go the distance
I know every mile will be worth my while
Flittering about the hazel washed sky, dozens of butterflies flew. Blue, red, orange, black, of just about any color imaginable. They had taken flight, long ago at the start of the year. Their path was clear, their minds set. They were heading north, to escape the coming dawn of heat. Why, why did it come so easily to them? The instinct to move and gather, while he had to struggle with the willpower to go across any territory. His eyes were barely open, dark slits of hazel. Just enough to glimpse the creatures above him, to marvel at them. Elaestr shifted, sending the insects launching off into the sky in surprise. He lay on his side, his shadow of a body stretched across the dust, sniffing the air. The smell of budding wheat and flowers was pungent here, blocking out any other smells. It made the wolf nervous, but in foliage this tall it would be near impossible to be spotted.
. . . . I need to move. . . he thought, gazing at the slowly swishing metallic sheen of the field. It was so hypnotizing, so relaxing. . . . Eli's paws ached with the past week's challenging travel, but he could not stop yet. There was still so much ground to cover. When will I find my home? Has if been forbidden that I have one? Am I fated to be a loner? he banished the thought from his head. Being positive is the key to success, isn't it? The male stood, shaking the dirt from his rather thin body. Prey was plentiful here, but he hadn't any luck catching so much as a rabbit. He was low on energy and would have to find something easy. Even a rat sounded appetizing. Surveying the landmark lacking environment, he chose on a direction that seemed like South. He began on his way, first at a walk, and then a rushed jog. Into the bright sky and for his hopes.
I know every mile will be worth my while
